Material Identification

Fast, Accurate, Affordable

material identification crystals on paper

The most common materials testing we perform at FAI is material identification.  We start with an optical inspection and then decide on which technique to use. The most common material identification techniques are:

• Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR)

• Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS)

• Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

• Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS)

What to Expect

There is no "one size fits all" approach to material identification.  We treat material identification like any other investigative process.  Some materials, such as nylon, must be identified first with FT-IR, and then with TGA or DSC to determine which type of nylon it is.  Other materials have dyes or additives that must be identified via GC-MS.  We don't identify metal alloys the same way we identify plastic co-polymers.  You can trust our scientists and technicians to recommend the most cost-effective material identification test regimen.
